“What if …”
You have to love any sentence that starts that way, don’t you? It conjures up delightful fairy tales and the deepest philosophy.
“… the whole universe is a story?” she said.
“Okay,” I said. “So who’s telling it?”
“Nobody. There’s no narrator or listeners. Only the story.”
That’s why I adored her. She lived in a different world; more magical, more complicated.
“Once I open the box, I know whether the cat is dead or alive. But you don’t know until I tell you,” she said
“Ha! So the observer exists and creates the tale.”
“Damn!”

Ah! Schrodinger’s cat. Nice one, Neil. There are quite few things happening here, but the gist might be that he’d be better off far, far away from her.

You think she’s dangerous?

Maybe not entirely! But I get the feeling that she’s not entirely sane and the guy is obviously besotted with her quirkiness. Those stories never end well, do they?

It might be hard work sustaining a long relationship with her, but it certainly won’t ever be boring. Good one.

Dear Neil,
What if? One of the basics of writing fiction. Love where my messy closet took you.

“What if…?” indeed! Quantum theory is so abstract. There is indeed, great discussion about what exactly constitutes an observer that will collapse the wave function into an actual state. So your story is topical as well as amusing. I shall stick with the Copenhagen interpretation for now!
Nice one, Neil!

There’s serious speculation now among a minority of physicists that nothing exists, and our sense of an ordered universe is entirely illusory. I still don’t get who sees the illusion

Reminds me of an old joke:
The physicists are going out for lunch, but they get pulled over. Heisenberg is driving and the cop asks him “Do you know how fast you were going?”
“No, but I know exactly where I am” Heisenberg replies.
The cop says “You were doing 55 in a 35.” Heisenberg throws up his hands and shouts “Great! Now I’m lost!”
The cop thinks this is suspicious and orders him to pop open the trunk. He checks it out and says “Do you know you have a dead cat back here?”
“We do now, asshole!” shouts Schrodinger.
The cop moves to arrest them. Ohm resists.

Just a reminder that Schrödinger’s cat is a thought experiment and no actual animals were left suspended between life and death in the writing of this story.

‘What if’ is the start of every story, isn’t it? Presume the box gave you this story 🙂

Yes it is. I’m not sure exactly what sparked the story. Jumble maybe

I like her philosophy. It would be interesting to have unique stories, depending on how we interpret the story.

I had a friend who was a philosophy professor. Once, after a prolonged silence, he asked “is it now, now”. His girlfriend said “no, it was now then”

Nice, a philosophical debate behind what seems to be a light-hearted flash. What is real or an illusion (maya in Advaita philosophy). An illusion may not be an unreality for an illusion is grounded in reality.

And there’s not enough room to swing Schrodinger’s cat in that cupboard!

That’s not a cupboard though – it’s a Time And Relative Displacement In Space machine
