There is, in these practiced motions, a kind of ease—a release. My wrist relaxes into the twist of unscrewing, my hand and eye into the coordinated pour and apportioning of quantity. It’s all about craft skill, the reassurance of know-how.
This may not be “eye of newt and toe of frog”, but still I feel connected to a line of mages. As I stir, the steps follow easily, one from another—they make sense, and so I make sense. And, though the exercise of control may be illusory, the ritual of control is real.

Ooh, well I’m intrigued. Lots of contrast in these musings, but I want to know what exactly is being conjured!

This sounds like a ritual he’s done a time or two and falls back on when a bit of comfort is needed. (At first, I thought he was opening a wine bottle. Just me, I suppose.)

I really like this but my mind wandered to wine or martini mixing with Alicia. People who drink have lots of rituals too. It might just be the time of day 😉. Cheers to a great tale.

Interesting story, Neil. At first I thought it was only an OCD ritual, the illusion of control and all, but maybe some real magic will result. Let us know if you know. 🙂

Thanks so much, David. If he can produce any magic, it will surely be in a spot like that

Any sort of ritual can be comforting, and, especially, when magic is involved. No magic for me, but I’ve done a lot of baking in the last couple of weeks to sooth my soul. Beautiful writing!

Oh this is so very visual. It is a kind of magic. The ritual, the preparation, controlling the dose. I wonder what it does?

Count me among those who thought he was pouring wine for the first paragraph. The second makes me think something more sinister is going on.
