The flowers are dark, so dark they swallow all light. For weeks, I didn’t notice them, my mind skittering past what seemed misshapen leaves. Only at day’s end, when the dying sun licks them like a craven dog, can you spot them—blood red, nodulated. No insects ever visit these monstrous blooms.
The bees know. I’m certain these are relativistic explosions, slowed to a crawl in our timeframe. We’re under attack. Neither the police nor my MP will listen, not even Mrs. Sanders, who holds that Boris Johnson was the messiah. I’ll gather my evidence. If I’m right, the detonations will slowly fade away.

Interesting take on an unusual picture, Neil: an unreliable narrator gathering evidence. What could possibly go wrong?

Dear Neil,
Interesting theories. A little spooky. But then, I don’t claim to know…but the bees do. 😉

Neil, you got my attention when the bees wouldn’t go near them. The ending seems a little anti-climatic, but perhaps when that stage of the invasion ends, something much worse appears?

The climax, I’d hoped, is the confirmation he’s in the tinfoil hat brigade with his interpretation,of the life cycle of flowers

Well, if the bees don’t like him, he doesn’t have it all together. Interesting take on the unusual prompt, for sure!

Such a fascinating, surreal story. Am reading Sanderson’s Skyward series and I got similar vibes from it. So much in such a few words!
