The kiss was overpowering in its intensity, its delicious wrongness. That much she remembers. She lifts her fingers to swollen lips, feeling the bruise left by the urgency.
Her husband continues to read his newspaper. Will he notice the wound? Does he at already know?
What happened after the kiss, she’s not sure. There were drinks, many drinks. Perhaps the story playing in her head is only something she’d read.

Maybe a little amnesia might not be such a bad thing after all. On the other hand, though…

That’s one hell of a kiss. The mystery is who she was kissing, my guess is it wasn’t the husband…

Definitely not the husband

Dear Neil,
The husband sounds oblivious, but who knows?

I think maybe the husband knows perfectly well but thinks it may be better to pretend he’s oblivious

I have a feeling the husband won’t notice jack. Denial works for them both.

Or perhaps he notices and is frightened of provoking a confrontation

I just hope she wasn’t kissing the mystery man inside the charity bin (subject of the photo), and that the husband keeps his nose in his newspaper . However, perhaps the husband spends more time reading newspapers than talking with his wife. It takes two to tango and I’m reminded of a movie with John Cleese and Jamie Lee Curtin. I think it was a Fish Called Wanda. Well done, Neil.
Best wishes,
Rowena

That’s a rather delicious state of “what happened?” that you’ve left us to figure out. This short clip could lead to all sorts of conclusions. Well done.

If I say that it rivals Sandra’s as story of the week, I trust you can accept that as the ultimate compliment.

I’m certainly chuffed to accept that compliment

A jolting mystery. Hopefully, she’s a victim of her own imagination, at least for her poor husband’s sake.

We may never know for sure. But there is the evidence of the bruise

I get the feeling that “kiss” wasn’t really a kiss.

In my mind it was a kiss, but an overly enthusiastic one

A potent kiss, perhaps what followed is better untold, or a censor might be needed

We know she feels her lips bruised. Does other body parts feel bruised? Makes me want to know who did the bruising…

Oooo interesting. Was it true or not? The bruised lips implies true. Will she tell him I wonder.

So much going on in this story, infidelity, betrayal or perhaps a drunken mistake. Beautifully written as always.

Neil, I agree with Subroto’s comment above.
This left me with a great many questions about what might have happened and how and if there’s
a lover or is it a drunken wild night and why her husband isn’t concerned or mentioning her injury.
YIKES … bravo for writing this so well.

Fun write, Neil. I’m trying to decide who I want to be and how I would like it to turn out. I do not want to be hubby. Kisses like that usually effect both parties.

This is sad and beautiful. To experience such a life altering kiss, not from your husband, who seems totally oblivious to you, before and after the kiss. So sad. But, wow, it’s life, isn’t it? Excellent piece, Neil.
