When the water turned solid he knew things were getting weird. Elongated raindrops hung from the branches like stretched taffy. He wondered if they might taste sweet. The air itself crystallised out and dropped in blue-white chunks from the sky, shattering musically on the ground.
So, it wasn’t really a surprise when a unicorn stepped into the clearing.
“Hello unicorn” he said.
“Hello man,” the beast replied.
“What’s happening?”
“You’re having an episode.”
“Oh, okay. I hope it doesn’t stop. It’s pretty.”

Talking unicorns are the best kind of episodes to have.

My granddaughter is almost 2 1/2 years old and I have to keep reminding myself that the last time she saw snow she was nearly a year younger, almost half her lifetime ago. Small wonder every leaf, every icicle, even a stick or water puddle is like an undiscovered treasure to her. We take the world for granted while the very young see it as a profound wonder to explore. That’s how I experienced your story just now.

Snow and ice really would look like some bizarre hallucination to someone who’d never seen it – nicely (and humorously) painted, Neil!

You conveyed the protagonist’s perceptions so well. His lack of surprise at seeing the unicorn was a great way to show that he was aware of his own hallucinations.

Oh! The unicorn made me smile. And man’s reaction, “Hello, unicorn,” as if unicorns appear every day. Lovely take on the prompt!

Wouldn’t life be dull without Unicorns and crystallised blue-white musical chunks dropping from the sky?

Hahaha! What a vision! Thinking of sweet icicles! Loved that part to bits.
I should feel a bit sad for the man for he may be losing his mind. But then, when such a the visions that you get, it’s hard to be truly sorry 🙂
