“Why is his hair on top of his head like that?”
I don’t remember the child’s name. Chrissy? Carol? But, more importantly, what does she mean? Where else would my hair be?
There is a sense of wrongness, like what happens in a car crash. Time slows down. Not that I’m offended. Rather, I’m fascinated by the rudeness. I suppose this is how children are: direct.
Her father looks at me in panic. I offer no help, unsure whether the question deserves an answer or a reprimand.
Glaring at me, he answers, “That’s his brains, darling, because he’s so clever.”

Dear Neil,
Children are direct for sure. It makes me wonder what his hair looked like for the child to ask such a question. 😉

Btw I was at the hairdresser’s yesterday restoring my fountain of youth! Feel 20 years younger today. Highly recommend it!

A tidy illustration of what not to say, woven around a parent who needs to have an answer for everything. Philip Larkin was right about parents.

Dad came up with the right answer, I think. Kids can pose some real stumpers, and the adults are often too set in reality to give an imaginative, creative response.

You can always rely on kids to be honest. It’s refreshing in a sense, but you have to be ready to take the truth!

I prefer the directness of a child. It’s too bad adults teach them that is not preferred. Good save by the dad but he needn’t have been embarrassed.

I like it when a child points out the obvious, the reality of things, and how they need an explanation. The answer could have been different.

I like how you show the MC’s perception and thought processes in this. ‘Time slows down’ as he moves through a sequence of reactions to the child’s comment. I can also almost, almost, read the father’s thoughts too, and then there’s the child’s bewilderment. Brilliant, Neil. You covered a lot of ‘thought territory’ here in your 100 words.

I don’t know whether to laugh or be mortified at the whole exchange. I wouldn’t be surprised if her next comment was, “I don’t want to be clever.” 🥴
