The heat hunkered down inside the house like a beast, squat and mean. Outside, a cool evening breeze threshed the air to yield up its lowering burden. In the world beyond, the sultriness broke, a flock of dark wings heading skyward. But not in here.
Open wide I flung the shutters and stripped to the waist, a sheen of sweat oiling my skin. Still the thing would not quit my home.
“Begone, foul creature,” I cried in desperation. “Your brothers and sisters have already flown.”
Nevermore. You are mine, and glad of me you’ll be when winter comes.

Dear Neil,
I could feel the heat. Nicely done.

That’s the way the heat here has been through most of July and the first week of August. Hurricane Debby has brought a slight reprieve. I hear that goose down is nice and warm in the cold weather 🙂

He should use it as a fan by getting it to flap it’s wings!

Neil, I like how you characterize the heat as a demon. It sure feels that way this summer. Makes me wonder who the brothers and sisters are…

Intriguing metaphor here, Neil. Unless it’s not merely a metaphor…!

Great description and a nice touch of fantasy! It’s the cold that’s hunkered down here this morning.

The still stifling heat, a companion that stays beyond it’s welcome. The irritation comes through in your words.

Wow great descriptions of the heats here! You put us right there. Are pesky bird that gets in and won’t leave! Infuriating. Great piece.

I like the weaving of the geese theme with the pressing heat and its refusal to fly. Also enjoyed the taunting last line and the truth in it!

I am literally feeling this now, every summer wishing for the cool and every winter wishing for the heat. Gosh darn temperate climates! Fun read.
