You can tell a lot about a man from his library, they say. Well, let me tell you, there’s a damn sight more to learn from a person’s leavings. You can live off those. Once, I found a diamond ring. See what I mean? The garbage tells a story if you know how to read it.
So, was the ring just lost or tossed out in rage? There were other things which suggested anger—a shredded dress, for one. After that, the contents of the bin changed at this house. Lots of ready meal wrappers. She’d left him!

Dear Neil,
When I was cashiering in a grocery store it was interesting to see what people bought. You really could tell a lot about them by that. Trash they leave also tells a lot. Your story has me wondering if there’s foul play afoot.
Shalom,
Rochelle

I’ve heard that digging through trash is a great way to gain clues in crime investigations, so I can only assess your claims to be true! very enjoyable read, Neil.

I’m not sure who has it worse, the man whose wife left him or the garbage picker? I know who has it best: the woman who left.

Brilliant take on the prompt, Neil. So much said in so few words and I have to agree – so much can be learnt by what’s left behind.

Ahhh, you really encapsulated how love and romance and commitment rings have a flip side – and the diamond gets tossed with an exit – and the “ready-meal wrappers” say it all!

I wonder why someone goes through that man’s trash so meticulously. Is this a murder case?

What a horrifying thought, Linda. How would I manage my career as a criminal mastermind then?

I mean… creepy neighbour going through the trash, but oooooo the gossip this generates. What is left behind can certainly tell a detailed tale.
Great take on the prompt.

I sometimes will wait in the line at the grocery store checking out the person in front of me and trying to decide their life by the contents of their cart, so yeah, I get it.

One can indeed learn a lot about someone from their garbage. You have to really get in there to find something as small as a ring.
