Triumphantly, he straddled the boundary, one foot crunched into the snow, the other warming in hot sand.
They’d told him it was impossible: you had to wait for summer to come, they said—you couldn’t go to it. With mocking earnestness, he had explained that, of course, you could. All it took was a plane ticket. He’d known what they meant. And now he’d proved that, as Einstein taught, time is only another place.
Hopping across the frontier, he narrowly avoided being cannoned into by a boy chasing a volleyball. The lad looked familiar, just like Grandad in childhood photos.

The grandfather paradox is a well-known refutation of the possibility of time travel. If you travel back in time and accidentally kill your grandfather, then you can never have been born to travel back in time. Friday fictioneers is a weekly challenge set by Rochelle Wisoff Fields to write a 100-word story in response to a photo prompt. You can find other stories here

Dear Neil,
Indeed, one must take care not to kill his grandfather in the past. It will make major changes in the present.
Shalom,
Rochelle

I think time travel is a great idea, however you should only remain as an observer, otherwise you become part of a reformed history.
I enjoyed this whimsical story.

Time travel is always fascinating. Interesting story.
There are wonderful movies based on this theme like- Back To the Past etc.

I like the confidence your MC has, Neil. Very encouraging to us dreamers. My TMBL (time machine bucket list) is growing ever longer.

We recently re-watched Back to the Future with the kids and I was reminded of the grandfather paradox in relation to Marty splitting his parents up. Of course, the movies just deal with such things carelessly, but your character better be carrying a photo of himself just in case!

I’m not at all sure he’s thought this through

That’s the thing with tie travel, we have to be really careful not to kill anyone off, or we are in a real pickle! Great take on the prompt!

You’re welcome 😊
That should read ‘time travel’ not tie travel…ooops!

Great story, Neil. I get a satisfying sense of the personality of your MC plus a little glimpse into the mysteries of time travel. And a close call with potential disaster when ‘Grandpa’ scoots by at the end.

I didnt know about this paradox but it sure is logical! Enjoyed this interesting piece although I am a bit confused about the hot sand bit – or is that his time travel machine?

If time is just one dimension, then the past, as they say, is another country. You should be able to walk to it

this reminded me of that movie, “back to the future.” i wonder if it’s really possible. who knows, science may eventually find the way. 🙂

There are many good reasons to believe it really is impossible.

Or the opposite, he could become his grandfather.
