Nobody noticed. The swimmers splashed blithe, doggedly oscillating in laps. Nobody looked up as the breeze pulled the flags in three different directions. It made no sense. The façade of the monstrous edifice behind bubbled and peeled away like scabbed skin.
Surely, I said, some miracle is upon us. Nobody listened. The waters parted and a squad of Pharaonic chariots clove the pool. Great trumpets blew, and a murmuration of swallows wheeled above. Then everything snapped back into place with a tiny sucking plop.
I grabbed a passer-by, knocking the ice-cream from his hand. “Did you see that?”
“What?”

Neil, I loved your word choices to bring the surreal event to life, and how you chose to pop things back into place. Lots of thoughts on what’s going on but I’ll leave my comment to end with, Good one!

You know, this is proof positive that people are so self-involved, they see nothing around them. Now… was there anything really to see? That remains the question.

What an epic vision Neil – loved it and your descriptions- ‘Then everything snapped back into place with a tiny sucking plop.’ that sucking plop is perfect – I’m not sure I actually saw it but i felt it 🙌

I love this Neil, although I’m not sure what just happened. Maybe ghosts? In any case, when I read the sentence “The façade of the monstrous edifice behind bubbled and peeled away like scabbed skin” I knew this was my kind of story. 🙂
